Domiciliary delegation

In recent years, the concept of supporting healthcare activities at home has gained significant traction, and for good reason. The COVID-19 pandemic emphasised the importance of accessible, high-quality healthcare, prompting a shift towards home and community-based care as a viable alternative to more traditional health and care settings.

Here at Home Instead, we have concentrated our efforts of the past four years on developing and rolling out a strong, robust clinical governance framework, whilst also supporting our offices in developing positive relationships with our NHS partners.

First and foremost, our motivation for advocating delegated healthcare activities is rooted in a deep-seated belief in our clients’ right to additional healthcare needs supported in their own homes.

In an era when technology has the potential to revolutionise healthcare, we firmly believe individuals should have the option to receive support in the comfort of their own homes if they wish it. This not only reduces the burden on hospitals and allied NHS professionals, but also provides a more personalised and less stressful healthcare experience for clients.

Comprehensive governance

Clinical oversight and competency are paramount in providing safe and effective delegated healthcare activities at home. Clients need to be reassured the care they receive will be of the highest quality and this requires a strong framework of governance.

To achieve this, we have implemented rigorous standards and guidelines for care professionals providing support in domestic settings. Clinical competency assessments and continuous training should be integral components of this framework to make sure social care providers are well-prepared to undertake delegated activities..

In addition, opportunities to upskill the care workforce are essential for the successful delivery of delegated healthcare activities. Many care professionals may need to acquire new skills or adapt their existing ones to deliver care outside their traditional scope.

To facilitate this transition, we will need to invest in training programs and educational initiatives that empower and provide them with the necessary knowledge and competencies. This not only enhances the quality of care but also creates new career pathways and job opportunities. At Home Instead, we believe this diversified training is an essential factor in our recruitment and retention successes.

Improving lives and careers in care

We are driven by the belief that expanding healthcare options to home settings can improve the lives of countless older adults and their families. To realise this vision, securing appropriate levels of funding, ensuring clinical oversight and competency, and providing opportunities for the care workforce to upskill are critical components of our journey.

Through collaboration and dedication, we can make healthcare at home a reality for the many and not the few and revolutionise the way health and social care is delivered, benefiting both individuals and health and care providers alike.

What prompted the shift towards home and community-based care in recent years, as mentioned in the article "Home is where the delegated healthcare is"? Telkom University
